Annual "Longest Day" Thursday Flyers trip to East Gull LakeFlyersThursday 23 June 2005 at 5:00p.m.
Warm temperatures and gusty winds could not be allowed to interfere with this club tratidion! As the Twin Cities ex- perienced near record heat (97 degrees F) for the date, and as winds blew 19 gusting to as high as 27 knots, members gathered at the Crystal hangar to prepare for the annual trip to East Gull Lake Airport (9Y2). East Gull Lake, a popular resort spot in the Brainerd-Lakes area, has an unlit public grass strip. With a 9:10p.m. sunset, members had plenty of time to make the trip, have dinner, and return to Crystal before official nightfall!
This year, there were several current members in atten-dance as well as a few former members that still enjoy the company and the trip!Princeton Flight Service warned we should expect some turbulence, but we were delighted to find a smooth ride in both directions. While the Six took a quick detour to Flying Cloud to pick up another member, a few of the other aircraft were able to keep in relatively close proximity. While it's always enjoyable to have another club member pilot on board, it's also nice to have both visual and radio contact with others on the trip. ![]()

East Gull Lake Airport (9Y2)...final for Runway 13
We had called ahead, and upon landing, were greeted by a courtesy shuttle from The Legacy. After a short ride, we found ourselves sitting comfortably in the air condi-tioned dining room. As usual, the food was good and the service was pleasant! ![]()
After dinner, we managed to fit in one shuttle (with plenty of jokes about clowns and Volkswagons and courtesy golf carts) for the short trip back to the field. Although the winds had died down some, they still provided a little resistance to our journey back home (can you say headwind???) However the ride was smooth, and we were tucking the aircraft safely into the hangar by 10:00 p.m.
On a weekly basis, Club Cherokee members gather to fly to a regional facility for a meal. During the summer months (daylight savings time), Thursday Night Flyers will take any available club planes and fly to an agreed upon airport (usually no more than 1 1/2 hour flight) for dinner. During the winter months (standard time), Saturday Afternoon Flyers do the same for lunch. If you would like to meet some club members and experience flying with Club Cherokee, plan to meet us at the hangar. Just drop the flyers coordinator an email and we will schedule a date.
